The Toolbox

Someone you love sits down across from you and says: I had a terrible day. You put your phone away. You want to be good at this.

And before they've finished the second sentence, you already know what they should do. You're only trying to help. So you reach for the usual thing.

Talk to your boss. Write it down. Go to bed earlier. Have you tried just saying no? Every answer is a good one. And with every answer, the table between you gets a little more crowded.

You're working hard now. Sorting, tightening, measuring. You're honestly a little proud of how fast you are. You just haven't noticed that nobody asked for a repair.

And then they go quiet. They say: forget it, it's fine. And you sit there and think: nothing I do is ever enough. But you're not useless. And they're not ungrateful. You're answering a question that nobody asked.

So put it down. All of it. It will feel like doing nothing. Do it anyway. And look at what was on the table before you started.

Just a person, and a bad day. They never needed it solved. They needed it heard. A bad day doesn't shrink because someone repairs it. It shrinks because someone stays. That isn't less than fixing. It's the harder job.

You don't need the right answer. You need about two words, and the patience to mean them. Who is still waiting for you to put the tools down?
